Abstract
The article addresses one of the most common and extreme manifestations of gender-based violence: femicide, regarded as an undeniable breach of women’s fundamental guarantees because of their generic status. It is precisely because this violation of women’s human rights still lacks social recognition, resulting from the invisibility and naturalisation of violent behaviour towards women; their study and dissemination are necessary with a view to proper care and prevention of the phenomenon. In this regard, the following reflection looks at a number of edges and challenges that are emerging in Central America around the reality of femicide and its comprehensive approach in the region, identifying a considerable increase in cases, contrasted by judicial and prison responses that require further reflection and adjustment in line with the criminalisation and sanctioning of this crime.
