Abstract
The aim of this research was to review and analyse, from a gender perspective, the sexuality and gender content included in the textbooks of Natural Sciences and Civic and Ethical Training at fourth, fifth and sixth grades of primary school in the 2015-2016 school cycle (2014 editions), in order to highlight the successes and shortcomings in addressing them. In addition, we inquire into vocational training in sexuality and gender, based on testimonies of four interviews conducted with primary school teachers in the States of the south-eastern Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Yucatán: two in fifth grade and two in sixth grade. The results show that textbook content reduces sexuality to reproduction and does not incorporate erotism, which is considered relevant in the comprehensive sexuality education approach. They also convey heteroormative ideas on emotional ties, and do not incorporate the gender perspective properly, as they fail to denounce inequality between men and women. Teacher training is inadequate and the operation of the hidden curriculum is evident, as stereotypes and prejudices of gender and sexuality are conveyed.
