Abstract
In this article, a number of archive sources – notarial deeds and ecclesiastical property and accounting registers – related to the Jewish presence in Barletta over the centuries xv-xvi are collected. From the examination of the documentation, there are many names and useful indications for the location of the Giudecca and the local synagogue. The short introduction recalls Barletta’s strategic role in both maritime and land-based trade and, in particular, at fairs, in which Jews were also called upon to participate; the central government’s actions to protect the local Jewish population are also highlighted. New documents on the Jews in Barletta In this paper some archival sources – notarial acts and Ecclesiastical wealth and accounting books – are collected, relating to the Jewish present in the city of Barletta in 15th and 16th Centuries. Many names of Jews in Barletta in which period emerges, as well as useful indications on the location of the Judeca quarter and the local Synagogue. The introduction underlies the strategic function of Barletta both in sea and land trade, especially during regular trade FAIRS, also emphasising the privileges granted by the central government to protect the pecuniary interests of the Jews living there.
