Co-design of a chatbot to facilitate administrative procedures for migrant populations

Abstract

The article presents the results of targeted research on how mobile technologies can support migrants through co-design methodology. The data were obtained through a diagnosis through five analysis and context awareness workshops, and five scenario-building workshops, conducted in Barcelona in the entities in the field that are part of the research team. In total, 52 migrants (16 women and 36 men) from diverse countries, ages and educational levels participated, and who had been living in Barcelona for more than a year. The results show a high use of smartphones and widespread knowledge of the applications that are mainly used for communication. In addition, the experiences of migrants indicate that they can use existing tools to access information, but that they need additional support to make the most of the mobile tools available. This suggests opportunities to create mobile tools to enable the development of new skills. To this end, a chatbot has been developed on Facebook and Messenger to help the migrant population with bureaucratic processes and which can also be used by entities in the field.
