Ethnic interactions and indicators of social inequality in the skirt Cementerium (SJTil 43), Tilcara, Jujuy

Abstract

Funeral behaviours are studied in the skirt Cementerium (SJTil 43 site) considering that: (a) funeral structures contain a portion of funeral behaviour; (b) different social identities can be inferred through the quantity and quality of material and non-material items; (c) in Andean societies it is feasible to explore aspects linked to gender, family life and social position that are distinguished by their deep meaning and symbolism, cosmovision and ideology. The analysis is archaeological and ethno-historical. It is noted that the Mountain cemetery shows a well-marked separation in the social role by sex. As the analysis of funeral inclusions suggests a high social status, it is concluded that this would be a group composed of members of neighbouring states and with official status equivalent to ‘inces of privilege’ This paper maps on the study of funerary behaviour in the La falda burial site (site SJTil 43), to see that: (a) Funerary structures enclose aspects of funerary behaviour; (b) Different social identity can be inferred by asserting the quantity and quality of material items; (c) In Andean societies, it is possible to explore aspects linked to gender, kinship, and social status, made distinctive by their stated meaning, symbolism, and ideology. Analysis is both Archaeological and ethnohistorical. At The skirt, a separation of social roles by gender is cleared. BECAUSE the analysis of funerary inclusions inputs an affiliation to a high social status, it is concluded that the individuals Buried at the site could well long to a group Formed by members coming from Bordering states, with an official status equivalent to that of the “incas de privilege”
