TTIP – Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – a source of economic and social risks

Abstract

TTIP – The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is an agreement that poses many risks to the economy, the environment, consumer rights, labour rights and access to public services in the European Union. The mechanisms contained in the agreement, including for the settlement of disputes between states and foreign investors, also pose numerous threats to democracy. The benefits to be gained from the implementation of the agreement will primarily be for the big corporations involved in transatlantic trade, with EU citizens and societies first and foremost at risk. The envisaged almost universal application of the principle of mutual recognition as a result of the agreement will in practice reduce the safeguards to protect the rights of citizens, workers and consumers in the European Union. Trade liberalisation under TTIP will be a driver for increased competition also vis-à-vis Polish small and medium-sized enterprises and, as a result, pressure to reduce wages and other costs, including the need to comply with norms or standards. The risks are therefore far more than the benefits.
