Abstract
Design and interpretation of models in structural geology, especially numerals, are eminently based on the principles of classical continuum mechanics, where the intrinsic formulation has a high degree of symmetry in essence. However, geological structures at all observation scales present a level remarkable of asymmetry. On the other hand, the mechanics of the generalised continuum of Cosserat by incorporating lengths characteristic of the structure of the subject matter in its constitutive laws and in its breaking criteria, naturally leads to asymmetry and heterogeneity of kinematic and dynamic fields responsible for structuring rocks. Based on the intrinsic formulation of Cosserat’s continuous media, this work emphasises conceptual models. analytical and numerical analysis suggesting an expansion in the interpretation of gênese and the development of geological structures, in particular those found in failure zones.
