From the ‘length’ of the earth ‘voluta’ to the narrowness of the land sold: reflections on Kombalan territories and communities in northern Mato Grosso do Sul

Abstract

Summary in this article, the authors analyse the changes in the forms of access to land by different segments of national society in the north of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The discussion takes place around the case of Kombola Familia Bispo, located in the municipality of Sonora, a region historically linked to a border area between the territories of the indigenous peoples Bororo and Kayapó. The case under review is emblematic because it covers indigenous people, kilombales and migrants from other states of the federation, all of which are involved in alliances and disputes, which have as their main focus land ownership and ownership. The transformation of space, with the agreement and participation of national state agents, resulted, according to an interlocutor, in the expropriation of indigenous territories and kilombales, since the ‘long’ land ‘voluta’ [devolved] was transformed into land sold, privately owned, regularised by contracts and deeds.
