Agro-industrialisation practices and local productive arrangements as a strategy to diversify and strengthen family farming in Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract

Weak access to monopolised markets for family farmers drives demand for new processes and practices that emerge alongside major food empires. In this context, new markets emerge, coexisting with trade channels such as fairs, integrated markets for tourism, agro-family industries and institutional ones, creating new market circuits. The aim of this work was to analyse how local productive arrangements can foster the diversification of family farming by relocating food production through short chains, stimulating heterogeneity and promoting rural development. The research was carried out on the basis of the ‘Arranjo Produtivo Agri-Familia’, a governance structure which boosts the installation, regularisation and association of agro-industries in the Taquari Valley, RS. The methodology used was desk review and interview with the managers of the APL Agroindustry and the owners of agro-industries that are part of the SLP. As a result, public policies to promote the implementation and strengthening of APLS are strategies that can strengthen family farming by promoting the construction and access to new markets, the creation and development of new products, promoting rural succession, diversifying productive activities, generating rent, through new social arrangements and horizontalised governance structures.
