Peace by Revolution: a Lexico-visual approach to revolutionary Mexico

Abstract

The article deals with the book Peace by Revolution written by Austrian political analyst Frank Tannenbaum and illustrated by the Mexican painter Miguel Covarrubias. That publication, which appeared in 1932, forms part of the numerous English language versions intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the background, details and achievements of the armed struggle of 1910. This work analyses the inter-textual-visual relationship between the components of the work in order to explain the functioning and characteristics of a book illustrated as a demonstration and part of the imaginary with which it was presented to Mexico among English speakers following the armed struggle in 1910. The process of framing the Lexico-visual corpus of this work is examined as a representative example of the work of Mexican and foreign plastic writers and artists. As a result, transcultural and extra-territorial work resulted in the construction of an imaginary capable of giving weight to Mexico’s representation abroad on this stage of history.
