Abstract

The current practice of psychiatry as a result of the development of psychodrugs since 1950, and the classifications of the DSM in its latest version, V, makes psychiatry exercise a doctor supported by neuroscience scenarios. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit information between nerve cells. This complex information may excite or inhibit certain psychiatric operations. The output deficit alters the behaviour of individuals. This neurological reality allows the doctor to rely on clinical signs isolated in the manual and to carry out the required medicalisation. In this way, psychotherapeutic interventions are left to other psychology specialists or to a personal decision of the psychiatrist. This thesis, written 83 years ago, teaches the possibility of using some knowledge of classical psychiatry and psychoanalysis to understand psychosis phenomena in a biographical approach that takes into account the individual’s specific history. At the time of his training, he called for the concept of ‘psychogenesis’ and the Jaspersiano method of ‘understanding’ which, subsequently, in its Seminar, Book 3, ‘Psychosis’ (Lacan, 1984/1955-56), will refuse to do so: “To all of this, I wanted to reach: the difficulty of addressing the problem of paranoia is precisely due to the fact that it is placed at the level of understanding. Here the elementary phenomenon, which is irreducible, is at the level of interpretation’ (p. 35).
