Abstract
This research provides an overview of sustainability in seven paraense municipalities, which are part of the dendar production cluster (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) in the eastern Amazon. This is an area of approximately 46.000 km² with different patterns of land use, which is considered a priority for the implementation of national biofuel policy because it has large land extensions under favourable soil and climate conditions. The search, using the Barômetro da Sustainability "BS, carries out an ex-ante assessment of the level of development of municipalities, analysing quantitative and qualitative data from different sources from 2010 onwards. Eighteen indicators for human (social) well-being and nine for ecological (environmental) well-being were employed, adjusted by the Barômetro scale. BS results have shown that municipalities occupy intermediate and potentially unsustainable positions, reflecting the socio-economical and environmental fragility of the studied region.
