The tango studies observed since music. History, music, print and dance

Abstract

The tango is a complex genre, with more than a century of history, accumulating around twenty-five thousand phonographic records since around 1905. The literature on the subject is very extensive and varied and it is therefore problematic, in a first approach, to discern which texts are relevant for its study. In this article I analyse the existing literature and propose a form of both thematic and bibliographic access. I first consider the need to acquire an idea of gender history, then I provide tools to facilitate the selective hearing and musical analysis of a broad corpus and to understand the functioning and importance of the letters. I also include some comments on dancing, which is one of the great attractions of gender worldwide. In order to develop this short access guide, I propose, with a critical view, reading a selection of jobs studying music, font and dance. Among the large number of editions, I mention only those that contribute to understanding the topic from music, those that can light our music analysis by shedding light on literary aspects, and some work that provides us with elements to understand the dance/music interface.
