Abstract
This article presents the role played by the bishop and archbishop of Cuiabá D. Francisco de Aquino Corrêa in building the scrubland identity between the 1910s and 1930s. As Governor of Mato Grosso, he intervened in the cultural sphere in order to strengthen the Cuban elites and overcome the political, economic and social crises. To this end, it has laid down a group of intellectuals who have engaged in building regional identity based on the idealisation of the land and the mass-grossest man, overcoming the stigmas of serton blossom. To this end, it set up the Historical and Geographic Institute of Mato Grosso and the Academy Mato-grossense of Letras, regional symbols (anthem and coat), and held successive cultural events. As a member of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, he worked to regain the prestige of the Catholic Church, to enhance the religious aspects of Brazilian culture and to spread regionalism, nationalism and worship to the nation.
