Cultural conceptions, gender and migration between Yucatecas in Cancun, Quintana Roo

Abstract

This article presents some elements that contribute to maintaining cultural memory in immigrant peninsular majas in Cancun, Quintana Roo. I refer to some cultural concepts (rituals, legends and conceptions) that allow immigrants of this ethnicity to continue to reproduce and perpetuate their sense of ethnicity in that tourist hub. The testimonies presented correspond to five interviews with women from the east of Yucatán State (X-Can, Temax, spite, Tunkás, Dzitás, Chemax and Valladolid) during the research process to develop my doctoral thesis. The reflections for the drafting of this article emerged in the process of that investigation and in subsequent field observations, in which it was possible to elaborate on the rituals of chaa chac and hetz-mek, the legend Xtabay, the meaning given to the heart, and the so-called ‘venting eye metaphor’.
