EDUCATIONAL PERCEPTION OF THE EMOTIONAL AND CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOLCHILDREN RESULTING FROM THE COLLABORATIVE DESIGN OF DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Abstract

The collaborative design of digital storytelling (DST) can become a strategy and ® caz to boost multiple skills and competences in choice, giving them the opportunity to create their own stories by relying on digital tools. In particular, this investigation finds that: (a) teachers’ perceptions of emotional and creative development achieved by pupils in early childhood and primary education (N = 282), following participation in a collaborative digital narrative project driven by the Ministry of Education; and (b) the level of emotional and creative expression embodied in native ® stories produced. The descriptive analysis shows the teachers’ qualitative assessments of the perceived change in the level of emotional and creative skills developed by school pupils following the design of DST, using 13 qualitative indicators. Similarly, the level of emotional and creative expression reflected in the stories produced (N = 14) is subject to expert evaluation. The results underline that the collaborative digital narrative of teachers has boosted the emotional lives of children’s pupils, highlighting the pupils for their empathic skills and for worriing for others, as well as for complying with what is being proposed. With regard to emotional skills, they are well adapted to new situations and identify and solve problems creatively. Primary students are also proud of their emotional and creative development, and higher courses have more empathy and concern for others, critical reflection and aesthetic sensitivity. After analysing the narratives ® – nales, experts recognise that they all possess originality and are appropriate to their intentionality, although they take precedence over the speech centric nature that minimises their emotional impact. They highlight the persuasive empathy and power of the characters, especially in Primaria. ® rmar can be said that the topics addressed, the audio-visual techniques adopted and the collaborative execution provided a suitable scenario to exercise emotional and creative skills.
