SUMMARY Rural settlements appear to be a territorially defined area because it has objectives linked to socially excluded subjects from the capitalist production process. The purpose of this research was therefore to carry out a case study on the inhibitory conditions perceived by the population of Cycero Romana I in the municipality of Esperança- PB. To this end, the following qualitative procedures were carried out: (a) photographic survey; (b) participating observation; (c) individual interviews. As a methodological resource, Participative Rural Diagnostic Techniques – ORD was used. On the basis of this research, a number of suggestions have been identified for improvements in the laying, such as sanitation and canned water supply. A methodological resource used was the techniques of Participatory Rural Appraisal-DRP. From this research were identified severe weaknesses for improvement in the settlement, covering as basic sanitary and piped water supply.
