Peace-building and the war against terrorism: Conflict of interests?

Abstract

The Global War Against Terrorism (GGCT) has been one of the most important issues in international politics. Its impact on international security has so far been overwhelmingly negative. In an attempt to analyse their weaknesses, US policymakers are increasingly incorporating peace-building activities and concepts similar to the CTGWG. This is partly a reaction to their current failures, reflecting an understanding of the long-term importance of sustainable solutions. However, the combination of TWG and Peace-building is dangerous as it threatens to affect the effectiveness and legitimacy of the latter. True international security requires approaches that are not contaminated by the CTGM and must curb further integration of Peace-building and concepts similar to its doctrines. The cases of Afghanistan and AFRICOM in the Sahel region illustrate the potential problems if the international community fails to sufficiently separate the two.
