Muse, procurers, designers. The long journey of women in architecture

Abstract

The 20th century was marked by changes and, above all, for women, it brought about substantial changes both in their way of being and in their relations with the world. First of all, our position on the labour market has changed, allowing us to acquire that autonomy and economic independence, albeit one thousand acrobaths, which have made it possible to achieve the necessary awareness of the value of itself. There are still dense and striking contradictions with strong asymmetries in roles and wages, while increasing forms of violence seem to want to break the paths that have been achieved so far. It is the home space that is the most dangerous, as unfortunately illustrated by news events. The home space is a source not only of accidents and unsanitary conditions (Castelli, 1996), but also, and more tragically, of violent deaths. A home space where experiences and stories, illusions and expectations are encapsulated, which implies and underpins behaviour, and which has long been an untouchable boundary. Indeed, leaving the home has always been seen as subversive activity like the use of public space, an action that is openly condemned and opposed, and is still impracticable in many parts of the world.
