Memories of the colonial situation: autobiographic writings of former Italian colonisers in Libya

Abstract

Settlers’ memories portray the colonial reality, testifying to the progressive enrolment of their bodies in an area already marked by colonial power and which they will contribute to this, a progressive awareness of their role as ‘civilisers’ through speeches, practices, objects and symbols. While the ceremonies organised for this purpose by the colonial authorities and the placement in the pods were the first steps in adapting to the new situation and the alterity, work on the valorisation of the land of the pods was the most important tool for the material and cultural resolution of that critical situation. If there is no ethnic distortion or just a background to memories (which almost do not name the local population), on the contrary, it is extremely alive to remember the colonial order in the territory: symbols of colonial power (Balbia Street, agricultural villages), symbols of conquest (cross and monuments to fascist fallen). The colonial situation, as announced by the authorities’ speeches and the reminder of the civil service, was found to be registered in the territory and, finally, embodied by the settlers themselves.
