The colour of the joinery: methods and practical results

Abstract

The dating method resulting from the discovery of hinge makers’ stamps is based on three items: the hinge mortise, the hinge mark and the core sample of paint taken at the base of the window moulding for the colour analysis. A practical illustration is provided in the following four examples, in partnership with the Laboratoire d’Études et de Recherches sur les Matériaux (LERM) in Arles, represented by Frédérique Vouvé:– Number 17, rue Champollion in the 5th arrondissement of Paris belongs to a group of three buildings erected by Jacques Curabelle between 1667 and 1670 for the Sorbonne.– The Hôtel de Mayenne in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, modernized and embellished by Germain Boffrand, is the last of the most prestigious mansions in the Marais district still to be restored.– The Hôtel d’Hallwyl in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, rebuilt in 1766–8, is one of the many mansions whose interior was designed and decorated by Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. It is the only one of these not to have been demolished.– Number 10, avenue de Sceaux in Versailles was built by Libéral Bruand in 1673. The building was sold in 1740 to a company named ‘La Ferme des voitures de la Cour et des messageries de Versailles’.
