The search for the total artwork in contemporary cinema: Derek Jarman

Abstract

The tendency toward the union of the arts and the creation of a total art work is one of the main purposes of the contemporary culture: plastic arts, cinema, music, opera, theater and happening, media arts. Its origin resides in artistic theories, from Horatio’s ut pictura poesis to Richard Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk. In the cinema of Derek Jarman we can notice this inclination to the unification of the arts in one art form. Jarman introduces in his movies elements of literature, poetry, music, painting, sculpture and theater, so his cinema is very close to Wagner’s theories of the total work of art.
