Abstract
This article presents some of the results of research “Raza”, gender and social promotion: the experience of the black middle classes in Colombia (a case study in Bogotá and Cali). It analyses the social rise of black people, particularly in the city of Bogotá, with an emphasis on the effects caused by gender and generational differences. First, general theoretical and methodological aspects of the study of black middle classes in Colombia are addressed. Secondly, all the biographies of blackbred people considered in the context of the study, which is analysed on the basis of their educational pathways. Then, the experiences of their social advancement are presented in detail, based on the analysis of fragments of the narratives of their life and family history. At the end of the letter, some comments were made on the relationship between black identity and social promotion.
