Abstract
This article analyses the history and present of alternative and citizen communication networks in Spain based on the premise that these are key vehicles for building strategic alliances, sharing and generating content, and ensuring public policies that benefit the sector. Through the triangulation of quantitative (surveys) and qualitative techniques (interviews, interview-seminar and desk review), the results show a plural and geographically diverse picture of alternative media networks. However, weaknesses are perceived such as the lack of legal status of many of these organisations, problems of permanence and continuity among activists, and poor dialogue between them.
