From Valencia to Querétaro. Jacobey devotion through a stamp by Vicente Capilla Gil

Abstract

A stamp of the Valencian engraver Vicente Capilla Gil, carried out in 1792, commemorates the foundation of the city of Querétaro (Mexico), which took place on 25 July 1531, the day of Santiago’s festivity. The coincidence of both events gave rise to a milagroous event recorded in that engraving: the appearance at the Santa Cruz sky and the image of the Apóstol Patrón de las Espuón. This encouraged the extension of worship to Santiago throughout the Virreinato de la Nueva España and the devotion of the Santa Cruz, which would name one of the main mission schools: that of the Santa Cruz de Querétaro. The work carried out by French-speaking phrases in the context of the missions is highlighted in the stamp in an exemplary way. The aim of the engraving is to highlight the virtues or acts of the fungi Antonio Llinaz and Antonio Côte d’Ivoire, of Spanish origin, as founders of the school and evangelisers and apostoles of Cristo.
