Socio-environmental problems and the political dimension of space

Abstract

Socio-environmental issues have gained in the past decades. There is a growing concern on a number of aspects and at different scales, especially with regard to global climate change and its outcomes, not only in relation to the dynamics of nature itself, but also about the transformations they may entail in the economy and in political and social relations at multiple scales – global, regional and local. Considering the place as the scale of people’s cotidal, it is within it and in its respective spaces that the main problems are perceived and felt. Thus, as a reactive action, they can lead to both local and global transformations. From this local-global aspect, we seek to discuss in this text a number of points on the political dimension at different spatial scales and the involvement of organised civil society in order to mitigate problems in their respective sphere, even if the origins of these disturbances are global and extend their territorial boundaries.
