Abstract

This article aims to reflect on the constituent aspects of the border habitus from the works “Bronteiras guaranis” and “Canaã do Oeste”, by José de Melo e Silva. These works integrate the historiographical corpus South-Math-Grossense and reveal integral elements of the civilising process of the Brazil-Paraguay border. The Theory of Civilising Processes, developed by the German sociologist Norbert Elias, is used as a theoretical contribution. Habitus, understood as a second nature, develops in the historical-social process that constitutes the development of the various societies marked by interdependent figurations. It is understood that the border habitus criticised by Melo e Silva in the 1930s, reveals aspects of the constitution and civilising processes of the Brazil-Paraguay border. His observations reveal the interdependencies of social processes and the historical and social character of the constitution of regional identity. It is concluded that the border civilising process is ongoing and that the interdependent relations between Brazilians and Paraguayans, Guarani descendants, produced a distinct and characteristic habitus of the region.
