Directory of the Alcones del Foklore in Jaiña. Correspondence practice that embodies versatility, tradition and modernity inside Tarapacá

Abstract

This article explores the particular features of the music practices deployed by musicians in the Alcones of the Folklore band, with particular emphasis on their repertoire. To this end, a review of the historical evolution of the bronze bands in the North Grande of Chile was carried out and fieldwork was carried out alongside that band. In addition, they were considered archaeological, ethno-historical and ethnographic data relating to the association between music and ritual in religious ceremonies of the Central and South Andes from prehispanic times to the present. It is suggested that, through their musical practices, Andean bronze bands are involved in the continuity and change of a network of musical, devotional and spatio-temporal relationships, collective identities and memories, which have persisted for some time in pre-incaic times and have gradually incorporated more recent sounds and devotions. These practices embody versatility, tradition and modernity in correspondence, as we will review in the case of Alcones del Folklore, during the festivity of Espla Santo, in the village of Jaiña (Tarapacá, Norte Grande de Chile), in the years 2014 and 2015.
