WOMAN SLAVE: A HISTORICAL RESSIGNIFICATION

Abstract

This article seeks to discuss the role of women in Brazil on the basis of the literary work “Victims algozes” written by Joaquim Manoel de Amsterdam. The work under review is divided into three narratives: Simeão: Cryoulo, Pai-Raiol: the feitiser and Lucinda: he remember that the latter narrative will be the most important for the search for addressing specific questions about slave women. It is worth noting that addressing the history of the black population in Brazil, as well as the specificities of slave black women, is certainly something instigating, as more and more this issue has been discussed in the recent histography on slavery. When thinking about a woman, there is an even greater need for historical rethinking, as the social group to which she belonged did not receive much attention from historians at different historical times. On the basis of these analyses, it is clear that the experiences of black slaved women should be taken into account when writing the history of slavery and of the country itself, since knowledge of their survival and social mobility strategies not only allows women’s history to be seen in a broader aspect, but also makes it possible to critically review historical writing.
