Punishment and release in ‘The death of acacia’ by Marvel Moreno

This article analyses the story ‘The death of acacia’ of Colombian writer Marvel Moreno from a multidisciplinary perspective that integrates elements of literary theory, hermentics, sociology and gender studies. In order to go beyond the anecdote narrative and look into the topics proposed by the story, the particular structure of the narrative is being studied, revealing the organisation of barranquillera society in the early 20th century, in which violence against women is present but appears evenly. The strategies used by the female central figure to circumvent the surveillance and discipline system imposed on it and the consequences thereof are also examined.
