Job search time and unemployment experience

Abstract

Without job, the unemployed people are also deprived of the time framing provided by any occupational activity. On the basis of this observation, many sociological studies have associated unemployment with excess time, overwhelmed by boredom or discouragement, and drained of meaning. Against this perspective, we argue that the experience of unemployment can be characterised by a prescribed time, corresponding to job search norms. So, we are led to examine the hypothesis of a plurality of temporalities organizing unemployment condition. To do so, we conducted a fieldwork based on in depth interviews with unemployed people who have been excluded as a result of failing to respect the job search obligations. We then expose tensions, leading to rupture, between two different time equations. First one is defined by the unpredictability and the overflow of the daily life time, second one is characterized by the pressure and the rationalization of the prescribed job research time.
