Studies on Intelligence at the Spanish Academy: a retrospective assessment through doctoral thesis (1976-2012)

Abstract

El The purpose of this research is to provide a retrospective assessment of intelligence studies through doctoral thesis written at Spanish universities between 1976 and 2012. Using the TESEO database, a sample of 40 PhD theses was systematically extracted and a descriptive and longitudinal analysis was carried out on a thematic basis, universities, directors and courts. A social media analysis of academics was also carried out in order to visualise emerging invisible schools. Between 1976 and 1992, no intelligence thesis was included in TESEO, whereas between 2001 and 2012, 85 % of the theories collected were presented, an indicator of an exponential change in trend. First of all are thesis with an economic approximation (42.5 %) and thesis with an approximation associated with international relations and political science (40 %). There are a total of 19 universities in which some intelligence-related thesis has been read, notably the Complutense University of Madrid and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. The results of the research are discussed in the recent historical context, setting out the methodological limitations of this retrospective and making some proposals for the future.
