Pessoa’s influence on Fernando Távora’s speech

Abstract

Summary As Távora himself acknowledges, “I am very interested in Pessoa. I am a real expert on the topic”; it is enough to have a look at his private library at Rua da Luz’s house, where he finished each day, reading until sleeping, to corroborate his almost happy obsession for him. That influence was parallel to that of Le Corbusier, its only permanent architectural reference, such as Shakespeare, was for the poet. Although, as they did not coincide in time, they were unable to cross his speeches, Távora claimed that Mensagem, Fernando Pessoa’s apologetic work on Portugal’s grandeza, was the book of his life and also focused on the aesthetic way of the former, its cause for a new architecture, a synthesis of tradition and modernity. His youth trial, O a problem of Casa Portuguesa, could be assimilated to the first book of the poet, setting out his vital mission in an almost heroic way, which would be reflected in the House’s project on or the sea. On the other hand, in his relationship with other key figures in his career, architects who complemented and spread their work, we found a narrative of heteronyms, who are cultured in the enactment of the so-called Porto School. This article seeks to reflect how the admiration of Távora for the poet in some way contaminated his thinking and how Pessoa’s reference constituted for him both a buoy to which he may be bound at times of doubt and a permanent brush on his activity throughout his entire course, helping him to justify the apparent contradictions in his synthesis. All the poems and quotations from original sources have been translated from Portuguese by this author in order to ensure greater continuity in reading; I apologise for this testimony.
