Duty and tilt in Kant and Schiller

Abstract

This study deals with the debate between Kant and Schiller on the role of slopes and duty in morality. Relying on an epigram of Schiller many critics of Kant’s ethics stated that Kant does not offer any place to feelings in ethics. In the meantime, this scenario has changed in recent years with a number of members of Kant-Forschung highlighting the role that Kant gives and feelings in his late works and that Über Anmut und würde would be the one where Schiller’s position in relation to Kant’s ethos could best be identified. Therefore, this study seeks to show how duty and inclination occupy; an important role in the ethical conceptions of Schiller and Kant. In addition, Schiller raises some criticism of Kant’s ethics and that study seeks to outline some of Kant’s responses to those objections in works such as Die Metaphysik der Sitten, Vorarbeiten zur Religion and Vorlesungen zur Moralphilosophie.
