The debate in social sciences on the crisis in knowledge building: nuances and future perspectives

Abstract

Discussions in the social sciences since the 1960s have been at the centre of discussion, the knowledge crisis linked to the traditional paradigm of science in the challenge of human explanations. There are two aspects that have led to the crisis: the first is the rebuttal of the universal demand for knowledge, which is inextricably linked to the linear conception of social history, between the past and the future. This conception meant belief in the progress and evolution of the world in a single predictable direction, essentially linked to the history of Western society and its different social order postulates. The second aspect of the crisis, the denial of the real possibility of reaching an objective knowledge. In other words, the rebuttal of the idea of neutral and objective science, given that it is impossible to completely isolate the observer’s assessments and assessments from what is observed, especially when what has been observed has the full ability to discuss and alter the judgements launched by the observer. The discussion of these two aspects makes it possible to propose challenges to knowledge production in terms of methodological, epistemological, ontological and even technical models in political sciences and in general in the social sciences and humanities. As a result of the reflection, the challenge identified for researchers is, among other things, to establish how to generate alternatives to the unequivocal look of modern utilitarian motive and to the conflict that can arise from the multiplication of interpretations of the world, with maximum discretion.
