The representation of Salesian schools in neutral supervisors

Abstract

We propose to analyse in this work how the identity between faith-based schools and Salesians, which has been built since the time of the Patagonian territory, has strongly influenced the discourse of school supervisors visiting them. They have projected a clear social representation on the ‘Salesian school’, not only referential but also forward-looking, in that it manifests itself as a induced construction. Within the Patagonian education system, Salesian education has been synonymous with religious education, as it was the only representation of the Catholic Church in this field. Through the analysis of the reports by supervisors of neutral salesian schools of the provincial period and interviews with these Council officials, we have noticed how identity building (Salesians/faith-based schools) played a key role in the social representation that supervisors expressed about Congregation schools, differentiating them from state schools by order, attention to pupils and discipline. From this perspective, the identity between faith-based schools and Salesians was broadened towards an analogy that merged morals and religion in order and discipline, constituting a social representation that supervisors reflected in their discourse.
