Where these data come from
Three cases of dissemination and presence of Flemish sculptures outside continental Europe

Abstract

The presence, circulation and dissemination of artistic objects from the southern Netherlands is a fascinating matter that offers a rich variety of study possibilities: Graphic material – printed or handwritten – books, stamps, engravings, paints, tapestries, sculptures and textiles exported from the port of Antwerp to Seville, the door to the New World, or even the distant Philippines and other European posessions in Asia such as Goa. Examples of books and artistic objects from Flanders currently survive in multiple Latin American and Asian collections. It is not rare to find in situ examples of Flemish graphic and art material or inspired by it in libraries, museums and convents from Mexico to Bolivia and even Goa Manila. The commercial character of Antwerp as a global distribution centre facilitated the export of luxury and artistic objects produced in regional workshops and exported by all corners of the earth. The export of goods to the Iberian Peninsula was geared not only to the privileged social classes, but there was a distribution on a much larger scale from the Monarchy to the middle strata that showed a strong taste for Flemish art. All these objects and books were sold at trade fairs such as the legendaries of Medina del Campo, Barcelona, Valencia and Seville and from this Atlantic Metropolis were sent to America or even beyond. This article shows in general the wide spread of the so-called ‘Mechells of Mechelines’, sculptures produced in this city of Brabante, which have become very popular in Ibero-American, and I have therefore analysed 3 different cases of the presence and reception of these sculptures in the Canary Islands, Mexico and the Philippines, which show us this early cultural globalisation, as Serge Gruzinski would say.
