UBIQUITOUS POWER OF HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY: KELEBEKLER AND BİZİ HATIRLA

Abstract

All relationships between gender roles are a reference to an area of power struggle. This area of power, as Foucault argues, has an "everywhere" feature within it. In this context, the privileges given to masculinity by the patriarchal social structure exist by including such hegemony of power in forms of masculinity. All forms of gender that fight against forms of masculinity in fact represent resistance to such power. In this study, the ubiquity of hegemonic masculinity’s power was examined through the films Kelebekler (Tolga Karaçelik, 2018) and Bizi Hatırla (Çağan Irmak, 2018) within the framework of the conception of power of Michel Foucault, who is one of the most important thinkers of the contemporary French philosophy. The study particularly sought answers to questions about how gender roles are created, what their reproduction depends on, and what structure the power of masculinity is based on, by associating Foucault's understanding of power with Connell and Halberstam, and by analyzing both films via critical discourse analysis.
