Magic andino-amazonic slides between the foxes and the three halves of Ino Moxo

Abstract

By analysing the function of chamanic practices in the fox above and the bottom fox of José María Arguedas and the three halves of Ino Moxo de César Calvo, this article explores the possibility of an alternative way of producing mestible identities that does not live or emerge from the intellectual sphere and which is also based on an indigenous cultural axis rather than having a western anchor. Fuelled by the fluidity that chamanism offers its practitioners (the possibility of becoming another entity/entity and located in a venue that allows an external epistemological horizon to be inhabited without abandoning one’s own), as well as the idea that spirit is common to human and non-human aspects of the indigenous (Andean and Amazon) thinking matrix, the machines that produce mestistic identities in the novels studied reveal subreptitious ways used by indigenous peoples to generate a mestivicular that works as a means of resistance. Thus, in the arguedan work, affecting the figures of loco Moncada and the member of the Maxwell peace corps, chamanic practices aimed at opening cracks that bring different cultural realities to dialogue and make logical what seems irrational within the western epistemological framework. Similar chamanic movements can be found on Calvo’s work. Ino Moxo and the jíbaros in the headroom are revealing for the readers the Amazon indigenous ways of negotiating with the otrety, even with the other western, with a violent push to suppress and double everything that is not the same to him. Keywords: chamanism; human/non-human; inverted learning; cultural resistance.
