Information retrieval education in South American postgraduate education: comparative curriculum analysis

Abstract

Aborda the Information Recovery (RI) discipline in post-graduate information science (CI) based on curriculum analysis of courses in Brazil and some South American countries. It seeks to know which subjects are addressed in RI in Brazil and how they relate to the teaching of this topic in South America. The article comes from qualitative, exploratory, bibliographic and documentary research, based on the curriculum analysis of Brazilian courses and other South American countries. It follows that the main subjects of the discipline are: the web environment; submission of RI templates; automatic indexation; natural and artificial language processing; assessment of relevance, taxonomies and ontologies. These subjects are developed in courses in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela. Based on the comparative analysis, it is considered that IR education in Brazilian postgraduate programmes is in line with the new tools and technologies that help the current RI systems.
