Exchange rate and international tourism demand. The case of Argentina

Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse, from a tourism perspective, the relationship of receptive tourism and the evolution of the real multilateral tourism exchange rate between 2008 and 2018 in Argentina. ITCRMT data and the arrival of international tourists in Argentina in the period 2008-2018 are considered. Time series analysis is applied to understand the secular, seasonal and cyclical behaviour of the variables. The relationship between them is based on an analysis of the graphs, considering the moments of change in the behaviour of the variables and interpreting the relationships in the light of the socio-economic facts that occurred between 2008 and 2018. The variables show a relatively stable trend and the seasonal and irregular component is identified. In the study period the variables are not directly associated throughout the series, although similar behaviour is observed at different times. This shows that ITCRMT is a relevant variable in the behaviour of international demand.
