Sex tourism and virtuality: travelling to cyberspace

Abstract

In this article we will propose a two-pronged discussion on tourism, sexuality and the internet. The first will identify and illustrate how the Internet would facilitate the exchange of information on sex tourism and contribute to its expansion. The second one will look at cyberspace as a complex territory where you navigate or where you’re surfing, allowing us to rethink the links between tourism, sexuality and the internet. When analysing movements (mouse click) in the sexualised areas of the Net, we discover a new form of sex tourism: virtual sex tourism. Cyberspace transforms forms of sexual sociability by allowing users to play with their socio-sexual identity, eliminating gender markers, destabilising hierarchical relationships and dispersing the user over time and space, unlike face-to-face relationships. Much work has been done on the impact of the multiple uses of the Internet on the training and organisation of socio-sexual networks. This new space has features that require us to rethink the relationship with space, time and travel and tourism. In other words, we would like to assume here that, if cyberspace is a new world whose complex geography differs from that of the ‘real’ world, it is conceivable that certain practices, such as tourism, may be found there, but in a new form. Browsing the Internet means transforming the perspective of those who travel. By preparing this article, I’ve ‘fallen’ at several sites that have made me imagine my own approach as a trip. The connection to the Internet as a meeting point with the alterity clearly transforms our relationship to time and space. On the Internet, we are no longer travelling to the other, but making the other to us.
