Wilamowice is a unique city mainly due to the Vilamic language, which has been imported by thirteen-century settlers and has survived to this day despite the difficult history of Wilamowian. As a result of post-war bans, displacements and exports to labour camps, intergenerational transmission has been disrupted among residents. Children speaking only in Vilamovsk were forcibly taught this language, which led many to a life-long trauma – Wilamov’s mother tongue was forgotten and it was too late for the natural acquisition of Polish. Many people believe that they do not know Vilamov, but when talking in Polish about clothing, traditions or values that are strongly associated with a vilamic identity, they use loans from this language, considering that they better convey the meaning of their speech. Despite the forecasts that the Vilamic language will disappear completely in the 20th century, his regeneration programme started at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, involving the University of Warsaw and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and foreign scientists. Wymysiöeryś is entering school and meetings are organised for people from several generations. Vilamowians themselves have been involved in the regeneration. The knowledge and use of language among young people has increased and has become a communication function, but also increasingly identity and a code that can only be understood by a narrow group of people.
