Abstract

O Increase in the number of women involved in illegal activities in the country, perceived by means of research provided by the National Penitentiary Department, draws attention to a highly complex and multifaceted phenonology, raising the need to think about the dynamics of Brazilian society in order to understand the meaning of this increase. This article, on the basis of qualitative research, has pursued an attempt to better understand the training of women’s prison data, the legal and social interest attributed to the characters of those statistics and the extent to which they are perceived in such a context. This makes it possible to understand how the number of women deprived of liberty in Brazil is formed (social and demographic implications), what the law has studied about women in prison and the great possibilities and complexities of the relationships experienced by women as perpetrators of crime. Finally, the importance of power and governance relationships in building the universe of meanings that make it difficult for them to perceive, prevents the recognition of individual women and often eliminate their subjectivity, which makes it difficult to recognise and realise rights in the face of a necessary solution to the problem by containing the increase in statistics.
