Review of the characteristics and uses of the Moringa oleifera plant

Abstract

This article presents the state of knowledge of the Moringa olefera plant and its potential impact on the solution of food safety problems. Of the variety of benefits this species brings to humanity in terms of medical, chemical and agricultural uses, animal fodder, biogas, domestic cleaning products, cosmetics and medicinal products, water purification, among others (Fuglie, 1999) can be highlighted. Due to the fact that its potential benefits are many and has very low levels of antinutrical substances, Moringa oleífera is a nutritious and charitable food that offers very attractive characteristics to establish its cultivation (Olson, 2011); if studies demonstrate the nutritional richness of the plant and its bioavailability in a sufficient way, there would be a powerful natural resource to combat child and family malnutrition, especially in vulnerable populations.
