Socio-spatial analysis of pension coverage gaps in Argentina

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to account for the evolution of gaps in the coverage of the retirement theme among Argentina’s older adult population, depending on the area of residence, during the period 2001-2010. In particular, the socio-spatial analysis of the gaps observed in the evolution of pension coverage is deepened, considering the Department, Party or Commune as a unit of spatial analysis. In turn, these gaps are compared with existing gaps in relation to certain factors that could explain them, such as the level of education or use of computator by the reference population, given the forms of application procedures for new pensions. On the basis of that analysis, it is possible to point out that the areas where coverage has increased most correspond to places where the majority of the adult population did not have the resources and skills needed to process the corresponding pension applications, which supports the hypothesis that there are various intermediation mechanisms that make it possible for new beneficiaries to have effective access to retirement.
