The text proposes a brief reflection on the topic of cultural heritage and the philosophical and historical foundations on which this debate has been structured in Brazil. Attention was drawn to the main criticisms received by the preservation programme adopted in the country and the implementation, from 2000, of the policy of preserving intangible patrimony, as an attempt to extend and take account of groups excluded by the materiality based cultural policy.
