The pedagogical potential of technology: Develop skills and foster autonomy and responsibility for learners

Abstract

The improvements that have taken place over the last decades in the field of Information and Communication Technologies have been strongly felt in educational institutions. In addition to its (re) known benefits from an instrumental, administrative or management point of view, we have witnessed an unprecedented expansion of social interaction environments and the construction of new learning scenarios. It is for this reason that our purpose in this work is to analyse the benefits that technology can bring in student learning, with particular emphasis not only on the potential of these tools to foster the autonomy and responsibility of learners in the teaching and learning process, but also on their potential for developing intercultural competences. Among the conclusions, two main issues are highlighted: on the one hand, the urgency of preparing teachers to exploit the pedagogical potential of digital media and, on the other hand, the need to deepen knowledge of the long-term effects that the use of digital technologies may have on our students’ behaviours and relationships.
