Urban youth: city, body, virtuality in Latin American cinema (Chile, Argentina and Mexico)

Abstract

This article analyses the representation of today’s youth in the urban environment in Latin American fiction cinema, addressing various tensions concerning a changing city, which is far from its traditional representation and adapted to the performance identity of young people, who make the spaces they live sensitive. The analysis will focus on films Ya I am not here by Fernando Frías (Mexico, 2019), Ema de Pablo Larraín (Chile, 2019) and the rise of the human from Eduardo Williams (Argentina, 2016), all of whom are young people. In these, we identify orally hermetic subjects that emancipate in their urban deambular, building fabrics or transit surfaces where both their artistic/cultural affinities and their immersion in the digital world come together; all this takes into account the mediation of the local context of the characters and their membership of a globalised community.
