Abstract
Blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber) is a new crop for the River Basin in the South Coast of Jalisco and is important for its agricultural progress. However, negative socio-environmental effects are observed. Since 2003, the conditions of cultivation and its expansion, as well as possible alternatives, have been studied. The results show accelerated growth since its introduction in the mid-1990s. A concentration of private owners and through contracts is highlighted. While sowing this plant may be replaceable, cyclical trends of overproduction and shortages have led to a lack of incentives to do so and a deterioration of productive capacity. The prospects for agricultural progress based on blue agave cultivation are discussed, and some recommendations are made to promote the sustainability of its commercial production system.
